We first wrote about Let’s Encrypt in January of this year, when we concluded that Let’s Encrypt had the potential to put HTTPS encryption within reach of every WordPress site owner. We’re happy to announce that free SSL certificates are now available at Pressable using Let’s Encrypt. If you host your WordPress site on Pressable, you can now encrypt your site with HTTPS at no additional cost. We’re making it easier than ever to get started: with a couple clicks of a button, you can have a free SSL certificate installed on your site.
Why is this important?
Back in August, 2014, Google announced that sites that have HTTPS enabled would achieve better search engine rankings than sites that don’t have HTTPS enabled. Before Google’s announcement, sites that handled sensitive data on the front-end, e.g. eCommerce and membership sites, were the only type of sites that needed HTTPS encryption. Google’s announcement was made in response to the need for greater security across the internet, and it prompted bloggers and owners of other content-focused sites to begin looking at HTTPS encryption for their sites.
At the time that Google’s announcement was made, HTTPS encryption had a minimal impact on search engine rankings. However, Google increased their emphasis on HTTPS encryption over time, leading it to become a major factor for search engine rankings. Today, HTTPS encryption is practically a necessity for WordPress sites. This is due not only to search engine optimization (SEO) considerations but also to the fact that sites that are encrypted with HTTPS are more secure than unencrypted sites. If you’re concerned about security or SEO, we strongly recommend that you take advantage of Pressable’s Let’s Encrypt offering and enable a free SSL certificate on your site.
