Strategies for Getting Backlinks to a Brand New Website (Part 1)

Person holding phone with backlinks on the screen.

Backlinks serve as a backbone for any website. They have acted as integral parts of online marketing for a long time now. They help to improve the traffic, ranking, and credibility of your WordPress website.

Although the effectiveness of high-quality backlinks on your site has not changed, the methods used to get them have changed a lot. Every year Google algorithm gives us a new ranking factor.

For example,

Successful digital marketers integrate backlink strategies into their overall marketing strategy and connect to websites that are not only of high authority but also relevant to their website

Here are the five best strategies for getting backlinks for a brand new website in 2019

The Skyscraper Technique

Unlike previous practices, it’s no longer effective to use directory submissions or thousands of ads to the classified websites for the sake of links. You need to have very high-quality content with valuable information to reclaim your link. In this, Brian Dean’s Skyscraper techniques work like wonder.

The Skyscraper Technique is a link-building technique where you write a better version of existing popular content and replicate the backlinks.

Here’s how it works practically:

  • Find a relevant piece of content that has a lot of backlinks
  • Write a better version including text, videos, and infographics.
  • Ask those linking to the original article to link to your better version of the content instead.

Basically, this tactic works on the natural human tendency to be attracted to the best.

Quality backlinks are hard to get, so we need to use smart ways to earn quality backlinks from high-authority websites. The first method I personally use is broken link building because it works ideally to create one-way backlinks. In this technique, we contact webmasters or website owners and report to the broken links on their website. At the same time, we recommend that they replace the broken link with our website piece. Since we are doing the webmaster a favor by reporting to their broken links, the possibility of getting a link back to the site is very high.

To use the broken links method, first, you need to research popular articles on your niche or find relevant sites that contain resource pages. You can find them with these Google searches easily:

  • your keyword + links
  • your keywords + resources
  • keywords inurl: links

For example, HubSpot is a developer and marketer of software products for inbound marketing and sales. So the search will be like “software products + links”. After landing on a specific page, you need to download a Google Chrome extension called “Check My Links”. Using this plugin you can easily discover broken links or 404 errors on any particular page.

Now, it’s time to go back and reach out to the webmasters. You can use a simple pitch which worked well for Brian Dean.

Step 2: Pitch Them:

Hi, [site owner name]

I was searching for some information on SEO when I came across your awesome SEO checklist.

Great Stuff!

I especially liked that you recommended starting keyword research off with buyer personas. So many people start with a keyword research tool before they even know what their customer searches for.

However, I did come across a few links that didn’t seem to be working. Want me to forward you the shortlist I jotted down?

Cheers,

Your First Name

After getting a reply,

As I said, the post is awesome as-is. I wouldn’t change except maybe update the screenshots and a link that wasn’t working for me (link)

And it would be awesome if you’d consider mentioning my SEO tools guide in your post:

Link to your post

(It might make a nice addition to the “their article topic” section of your post.)

When you reach out to webmasters, be polite and introduce yourself first. Tell them that the link associated with the resources is no longer available. Always indicate the exact location of the broken links so that they can be found easily. Suggest to them the best alternatives from your website to replace those links. Try to be helpful. Do not be greedy to get a backlink.

Infographics are one of the most successful ways to get tons of traffic to your site and relevant backlinks. They are super interesting because they are easy to understand and share. Everyone loves visual data; therefore, there is a high demand for infographics.

Considering that, Hubspot produced lots of infographics that have brought them a ton of backlinks. They have an in-house designer who designs the infographics, but if you don’t have your own designer you can hire one through Upwork or Fiverr.

The hardest part of infographic creation is to think about a topic that goes well with the infographics, and then make the copy and graphics that you want to include in them. You must carefully choose your data. Each must have a unique and interesting story for your audience. To get the best out of it, you can follow the latest trends and see what people are looking for. Then create your infographic with statistical data.

To get started building your own infographics, check out these 15 free infographic templates from Hubspot.

To get started,

First, you need to research and collect data for the content. Second, you must find someone who makes your content visible. An ace designer will take a lot of weight off your shoulders. Just talk about a topic, create the content, and let the designer start their spell.

Lastly, do not forget to include an embedded code on the bottom of your infographics. That way people from other websites can easily upload your infographic and place it on their website.

Infographics are useful in multiple ways. Even if you don’t get the backlinks, you get some visibility of your brand on the web if you put your logo in the infographics.

Next time, we’ll explore the three other ways to get quality backlinks from websites to improve your site’s visibility to search engines.
