Everyone knows about the ‘usual’ SEO best practices: sprinkling keywords or phrases around a piece, working in a plethora of backlinks to yours and your partners’ pages or ebooks, ordering content using headers, big and small…the list goes on and on. But did you know there’s a key factor to SEO that you might be overlooking? That’s right. You could be leaving a crucial piece of the SEO puzzle out of your strategy.

What is it? Going green. Not necessarily you or your business, but your website. While it won’t immediately rocket you to the top spot of search results, it will tick one more box in the almighty Google’s optimization requirements, and in the end, isn’t that what we’re all trying to do? Let’s take a look at how a green server environment can affect SEO and what improvements can mean for your business.

Go Green for SEO

While we all love the idea of going green, we often forget about one of the biggest resource drains on the planet: the Internet. As a whole, the Internet uses about 10% of the world’s electricity. That’s quite a staggering figure when you consider that only about 58% of the world actually uses the Internet

To help improve this figure and to kickstart green initiatives, Google began rewarding sites that use less resources than others. But it’s not as easy as that. You don’t control the resources your site uses. Your host does. How can you actually have an impact? It’s pretty easy, actually. These changes are ones you’re probably already making!

Improve Site Efficiency

One of the quickest and easiest ways to improve the environmental impact of anything is to make it more efficient. While you might not have control over how efficiently your website host operates, you do have control over how much electricity they use to deliver your site to users around the world. Use these tips to improve efficiency and your site will be greener than ever.

  • Trim the fat.

Get rid of unnecessary media on your site. Unnecessary pictures, text, pages…they all take up unnecessary resources from your host. Get rid of things you don’t need and decrease the amount of resources your site uses. And all of these performance increases will help improve SEO!

Some ways to easily slim down your site?

  • Reduce image size.
  • Slim down copy.
  • Only use video when necessary.
  • Optimize fonts and design.
  • Find a green host.

You might not be able to control what kind of resources or power your hosting provider uses, but you can control what host you use. Find a host that uses an energy efficient infrastructure and get rewarded for it! Help the planet, help your business. It’s a win/win!

  • Reduce your carbon footprint.

While you can’t control everything about your sites, you can make a difference by offsetting the environmental impact of your internet footprint. Plant some trees (most sites can be offset by planting 5-10 trees), walk to the store instead of driving, carpool with coworkers, or even start working remotely! The possibilities are endless, and every little bit helps.

With the threat of climate change looming and its effects being felt more and more by people across the globe, it’s our job to do everything we can to reduce our environmental impact. When so much of our lives are spent online or with technology, we can easily help reduce that impact by taking a few simple steps to make your site more eco-friendly. And hey! You’ll improve your SEO while you’re at it. It’s a win-win! Interested in learning more about how Pressable and Automattic help improve sustainability on our platforms? Learn more here.
